GPT Demo at Brighton Palace Pier

GPT Demo at Brighton Palace Pier

2nd March 2021

Game Payment Technology (GPT) has successfully demonstrated the use of the Game Payment app to pay and play basketball and air hockey machines in the arcade at Brighton Palace Pier.

As the lockdown restrictions begin to ease over the coming months, GPT is keen to support the amusement industry, which has taken a huge hit during the coronavirus pandemic. The decline in the use of cash was already having an impact before the pandemic. It is now more important than ever to address this decline in order to help the amusements industry get back on its feet.

Mike Brocklehurst from Brighton Palace Pier commented: “We’re certainly seeing that cash is going by the wayside. We’re hoping more and more for contactless payments and we’ve got to find a solution to help our customers play our games. Game Payment provides that for us.”

Game Payment was shortlisted as one of five companies competing for the Best Start-Up Innovation Award at the Merchant Payments Ecosystem event. The demonstration was live streamed to 700 audience members, who then voted for their winner. GPT received enthusiastic feedback but were beaten by a payments solution for the travel industry.

During the presentation, GPT director John Rozek stated: “We are currently live in 90 pub venues, which includes four of the six top UK pub chains. A number of the leading British arcades are installing the solution now ready for use post-lockdown. We all look forward to the end of the lockdown restrictions and the exciting future ahead for GPT.”

The recording from the live demo at Brighton Palace Pier is available on the GPT website and social media channels. Find out more about Game Payment Technology here: www.gamepayment.technology and follow @gamepaymenttech on Twitter to stay up to date with all the latest developments.

Dransfields Embraces GPT Cashless Technology

Dransfields Embraces GPT Cashless Technology

2nd February 2021

Dransfield Novelty Company Ltd. are one of the largest independent suppliers of gaming and amusement machines, servicing pubs and clubs across the whole of Great Britain. As one of the main suppliers to private member clubs, Dransfields also service some of the major pub and hospitality chains such as Wetherspoons, and Mitchells and Butlers. The company has grown through a series of acquisitions since 1946, perhaps most notably with Gameco Holdings Limited, owners of Reflex Gaming. Both organisations operate independently. However, the coming together of both operator and manufacturer has allowed Dransfields to access the whole supply chain and better influence product innovation.

Chris Haley, managing director of Dransfields, sits on the bacta management committee and for the past 6 years has served the trade association as its treasurer. As the amusement and gaming machine industry trade association, bacta, and its members strive to deliver the very best in innovative solutions for the industry. The decline in the use of cash had been a focal point in Chris’ committee meetings for some time. This is where the Game Payment solution was first considered. Chris commented, “Both Reflex and Dransfields are very innovative and are always looking for the ‘next thing’ in gaming. We were also looking at age verification software at the same time as the decline in the use of cash. So when Game Payment presented a solution for both, it was the perfect fit.”

Dransfields were heavily involved in the early development of the Game Payment solution. They were able to give input from both the point of view of an operator and of a manufacturer, whilst combining shared insights into the player journey. Chris explains, “We’ve given lots of technical feedback from the operator’s viewpoint and that’s been fed through into the app and into the design of the system.”

Chris went on to say, “I’ve seen other cashless solutions, but I’ve always been convinced that Game Payment was the right solution for us as a company, not only because it’s backed by bacta and therefore “non-partisan”, but because it’s been truly developed with the player and associated protection measures at its core. We’ve not had to adjust ourselves to fit an inferior system. Instead, we’ve been able to work collaboratively and design something that works for the industry because it’s been designed by the industry.”

The demand for cashless payment is greater than ever before, with fewer and fewer people carrying cash. Chris commented, “Some venues were starting to lose their casual players or even some core players because they just weren’t carrying cash in their pockets and had increasingly limited access to ATMs in venues. The Game Payment app allows these players to continue to use gaming machines, whilst being very simple and user friendly.”

An initial 37 Game Payment-enabled machines were rolled out across the country by Dransfields. They chose a cross-section of different venue types, for example: private members clubs, free trade wet-led pubs, and pubs that offer dining. One of the benefits of Game Payment is the reduction in the large amounts of float to pay out jackpot wins. This is particularly beneficial to the private member clubs that typically have machines with higher jackpots. Chris went on to say, “We’re trialling some machines with Mitchells and Butlers. Feedback so far is that they were surprised how easy the solution was to use, and clearly understood by the players. Furthermore, the transactions were seamless.”

The Game Payment solution includes a host of social responsibility features within the app, such as age verification, the ability to set safe bet limits, and reminders after extended periods of continuous play. Chris explained that the venues he has spoken to especially like this. It helps to protect any of their customers that may be suffering from problem gambling.

All of Dransfields’ Reflex digital machines are now Game Payment-enabled, as well as a selection of analogue machines. Take-up from the players in between the lockdowns was higher than anticipated. Chris explained, “Within a venue we expected to have a small number of core users, and whilst we have seen that, we’ve also seen a lot of casual players download it within a venue and trial it. Players have adopted the system quite quickly and it’s taken off faster than we had expected. We also expected to see take-up mostly amongst the younger generations. However, we were pleasantly surprised to see a large proportion of older players as well.”

Although the national lockdown has put things on hold for now, Dransfields are poised and ready to go as soon as the restrictions ease. Chris stated, “If it hadn’t been for Covid we’d have had real momentum behind this. We’ve trained all our engineers and we’ve introduced Game Payment to all our account managers so that they could start selling the solution into customer sites. When the lockdown ends, I think it will gather momentum and organically grow as people get used to seeing it. Dransfields will certainly be pushing for a quicker roll-out and we’re confident there will be demand there.”

AMS Hails the Success of GPT Cashless Play

AMS Hails the Success of GPT Cashless Play

2nd January 2021

Automatic Machine Services Ltd (AMS) is one of the UK’s leading independent gaming and amusement machine suppliers. As a family-run organisation, established in 1960, they supply fruit machines, pool tables, juke boxes and other amusement machines to pubs and clubs across the Southeast of England.

In early 2020, AMS partnered with Game Payment Technology (GPT), a joint venture between the amusement and gaming machine industry trade association, bacta, and payment industry specialists, Polar Moment. AMS became early adopters of the Game Payment solution, installing this into an initial roll-out of 50 fruit machines.

Jason Jarrett, managing director at AMS explains why they chose to become early adopters of the Game Payment solution: “We pride ourselves on investing in quality products, to maximise income for everybody concerned, which is why innovation and development of technical advances in machines is paramount to us. That’s why we’re always so interested in applying that to our products and giving that to our customers so that everybody is receiving the best quality and opportunity to maximise income. Any advances in technology and making things simple and easier are things that we always want to apply to our products.”

Another key factor in AMS’s decision to become early adopters, was that GPT is majority owned by bacta. Bacta is the trade body that represents the interests of Britain’s amusements and high street gaming manufacturers and operators. It is therefore trusted by the government and by the industry. Jason commented; “Some of the other cashless payment solutions in the market are not supported by bacta in this way, so we knew Game Payment was going to be more stable and less of a risk. Having bacta involved gave us every confidence that it was going to work and be successful.”

The roll-out began in February 2020 and AMS were happy to be involved in the early stages and have their input included in the development of the product. 50 venues across southeast England were chosen to trial the Game Payment-enabled machines. AMS worked closely with these venues to ensure they understood the new technology and what sort of questions they might get asked by players. Jason stated: “Everybody we spoke to about the app embraced it, and said ‘yes let’s give that a go, that sounds like a great idea’. It’s very simple to use, very quick to connect to a machine, and gives the player confidence that their money is secure.”

Just as the rest of the industry has suffered due to the pandemic, the roll-out was interrupted by the first lockdown in March 2020. Nevertheless, as the restrictions began to ease over the summer, initial data showed that the value of cashless funds per machine was more than 4 times the pre-launch forecast. Bacta’s head of finance and operations, and a director of GPT, Robert Gibb stated: “We are delighted at the feedback and data. This validates our development strategy and the attention to detail that underpins the entire GPT player experience.”

Looking ahead to the future, as the restrictions start to ease, GPT will be able to continue the successful roll-out of machines. Jason commented: “I genuinely believe that once we roll out in greater numbers, after we return to normal, the usage will take over from the cash… in the next two years or so we will see the release of machines that won’t have cash handling functionalities in them because there’ll be no need, or no demand.”

GPT are also developing a software version of the hardware installed in each machine, as well as a version designed for family entertainment centres. Tim Stratton, director at GPT stated: “A silver lining of the delayed roll-out is that we’ve had time to work on new developments and expand GPT’s product range. These two additions to our products mean that GPT now has a solution for all types of amusement machine, with a consistent, easy-to-use experience for players.”

Despite the relatively short period between successive lockdowns, Game Payment has proved itself both technically and commercially. Jason summarised the main benefits to AMS: “… It’s innovative, slick, so simple to connect to a machine, add your money and play. It’s easy to use, easy to understand and it’s gone out there and it’s been used – that’s the proof of the pudding”.

Game Payment Technology Demonstrates Cashless Payment with Sega Amusements

Game Payment Technology Demonstrates Cashless Payment with Sega Amusements

2nd September 2020

GPT and Sega Amusements International Ltd. have collaborated to successfully demonstrate cashless payment to play one of Sega’s arcade machines.

James Miller, bacta president, commented “GPT was set up by bacta to develop a cashless payment app as a simple cost-effective solution for the whole amusement machine industry. Now, with the technical support from Sega, we are able to provide just that: a simple-to-fit, secure, low-cost, cashless payment option for all kinds of amusement equipment including videos, redemption, pinball etc. This will be a massive benefit for all operators.”

Justin Burke, Sega’s General Manager – Sales, commented “After being requested by bacta to assist Game Payment Technology on a technical front, with the integration of their system and amusement games, we were only too happy to help. To be a part of such an important step for the whole industry is an honour. Once live in the marketplace, I am sure this will be a massive benefit to all concerned. Seeing the app in action brought it home just how convenient it is for the player and equally how easy it is for any operator to use. Going forward, I can quiet easily see Sega, and other manufacturers, installing the hardware at production stage to support this technology.”

New Version of the Game Payment App

New Version of the Game Payment App

2nd July 2020

The team here at GPT have been working hard to make improvements to the Game Payment app. We hope to be launching the latest version of the Game Payment app in late July, offering a far superior user experience.

So, what’s new?

With the new version of the app, we have removed the NFC requirement to connect the app to a machine. Now, players will be able to look for and connect to machines near them, directly in the app, without the need to tap their phone or tablet on a games machine. Yes – tablets too! The previous version of the app could only be used by mobile phones, but now users can get the new version of the app on their Bluetooth-enabled tablets.

For operators, this means they no longer need to site NFC tags on the games machine, leaving them free to brand the machine with ‘Game Payment Enabled’ as and where they see fit, without the constraint of players needing to be able to ‘tap’ on the machine.

How does it work?

Once a user has downloaded the app and signed up, they can then press PLAY. A scan will start to search for machines within range of the user’s device.

A list of machines in range, that are not currently being used, will then be displayed, with the closest machine shown first. The user can then click to connect to their chosen machine.

If no machines are found within range, the user can click FIND VENUES, which then opens the venue finder page on the Game Payment website: https://www.gamepayment.technology/where-to-play/.

Interested?

Game Payment is now rolling out to early adopter sites. The hardware is easy to install in new machines or to retrofit, for both digital and analogue machines.

Latest News From Game Payment Technology

Latest News From Game Payment Technology

12th June 2020

It has been a busy few months here at GPT, with the much-anticipated go-live of the Game Payment app in March. Unfortunately, the pilot had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. Believe us when we say that we are missing the pub just as much as you are! However, we did manage to get some players using the system before the shutdown, which was a useful experience and provided us with some valuable feedback.

The team at GPT are working hard to get everything in great shape for when the pubs can open again. We have been enhancing the product to provide:

  • An age verification system for cash-only machines
  • The ability to offer incentives to players to use Game Payment

We hope to re-start roll-out in June. If you are interested in taking part, please contact sales@gamepayment.technology.

In May, GPT received its first order from Reflex Gaming, the largest UK owned gaming machine manufacturer in the UK. Reflex Gaming have announced that all of its new machines will be enabled for Game Payment. This will mean operators have the option of allowing cashless payments on all their machines, ensuring greater safety for staff and customers.

Quentin Stott, CEO of Reflex Gaming, commented; “We are delighted to have the ability to provide cashless payments on our gaming machines. We’re also very excited about the age verification and social responsibility capabilities that Game Payment offers. The accuracy of this technology is far higher than any human can achieve. Providing greater safety and security to our end users is of paramount importance to us.”

From all of us at Game Payment Technology: thank you for your continued support, stay safe, and we look forward to working with you in the near future.
